Serving our community is something our Willoughby chiropractic and massage services offer. And with it being back to school season, many youth and young adults could benefit from our care. We want to share how!
Back to School Spinal Health Tips
With the back to school routines in full swing, spinal health might not be the first thing on your mind. However, between the weight of a backpack, hours spent sitting at desks, and sport activities – this can put significant strain on someone’s spines.
At Willoughby Chiropractic & Massage, we want to alleviate any tension and the strain, as well as provide some essential tips to keep your spine healthy throughout the school year.
Backpacks & Your Spinal Health
Ensure you are using a backpack with padded straps, a padded back, and multiple compartments to distribute weight evenly. It’s should be proportionate to your body size, with the bottom resting just above your hips.
Proper Posture
Sitting for long periods of time can cause spinal discomfort. Ensure you are sitting with your back straight, feet flat on the ground, and shoulders relaxed.
Both ‘tech neck’ and slouching can lead to lasting posture issues. So creating healthy habits at the start of the school year can count for a lot.
Movement Matters
Ideally, you should be taking breaks every 30-45 minutes. Stand up, stretch, and move around to reduce spinal tension and improve circulation. Ask for a bathroom break if necessary.
In addition, regular physical activities can also help to strengthen muscles and improve posture.
Implement a Consistent Sleep Routine
Sleeping on your back or side with a supportive pillow and mattress, along with a consistent sleep schedule, will support your overall health and well-being as well.
We understand that all of the above is not always possible. We are here to provide chiropractic and massage services in Willoughby to alleviate desk-duty tension as needed!
