Summer is a season packed with activity—whether you’re training for a fall season, hitting the gym harder, or just spending more time outdoors playing your favourite sport. But as the intensity of your summer workouts and games rises, so does the risk of wear and tear on your body.
At Willoughby Family Chiropractic, we understand the unique needs of athletes because we’ve lived that life. In fact, Dr. Mitch Spooner knows firsthand what it means to push your body to perform—and how vital regular chiropractic care is for recovery, injury prevention, and peak performance, which we want to share!
From Hockey Player to Sports Chiropractor

Dr. Mitch Spooner’s athletic background runs deep—he played many sports before committing to hockey, spending four years in the Western Hockey League with the Vancouver Giants, Regina Pats, and Seattle Thunderbirds. Like many athletes, he relied on chiropractic care to stay game-ready.
After experiencing multiple concussions, Dr. Spooner’s focus shifted from symptom relief to understanding the root causes of pain and dysfunction. This inspired him to pursue chiropractic care professionally, earning both a Doctor of Chiropractic and a Master’s in Sports Medicine from the University of Western States.
Today, he brings hands-on experience treating athletes of all levels—from triathletes and youth soccer players to high school teams and adaptive athletes—supporting full-body performance, recovery, and injury prevention.
Why Athletes Should Prioritize Athletic Chiropractic Care
Summer brings opportunity—but also risk. High activity levels, travel, heat, and inconsistent rest can all take a toll on your performance and recovery. Chiropractic care helps to:
Prevent Injuries
Regular adjustments improve spinal alignment and joint mobility, reducing the risk of strains, sprains, and overuse injuries.
Enhance Performance
When your body is aligned and functioning optimally, your coordination, balance, and reaction times improve—giving you a natural competitive edge.
Support Recovery
Chiropractic care can help support your body’s ability to recover after intense workouts, activities or games.
Treat the Root, Not Just the Symptoms
Pain is your body’s way of signaling imbalance. Dr. Spooner’s approach focuses on correcting the underlying issues—not just masking discomfort—so you can stay active and pain-free longer.
A Chiropractor Who Understands the Athlete’s Body
Whether you’re a high-performance athlete, a weekend warrior, or someone who simply loves staying active, Dr. Spooner brings a unique combination of experience, training, and empathy to every treatment. He’s passionate about helping athletes maintain peak physical condition, recover faster, and stay in the game longer.
